Piano Refinishing

Unlike other fine furniture refinishing, piano refinishing requires that the craftsman not only has a great understanding of all the many aspect involved in refinishing a piano but also a great understanding of the instrument itself.

The basic steps involved in piano refinishing are as follows:

1. Remove the inside portion (the action) and disassemble the piano down to each individual piece including hardware such as the pedals and the hinges.

2. Clean each wood peace of any dust then strip the old finish off.

3. Once cleaned and stripped any repairs can be done to the wood pieces such as scratch removal, dent removal and repairs to the veneer can me made.

4. Once all repairs are made and the piano is sanded with several grades of fine and extra fine sand paper the new wood stain can be applied to the desired color.

5. After the stain has setup and the wood has been cleaned and re sanded with the grain filled, the lacquer can be applied and the piano can then be polished to the desired sheen.

If you're going to have your piano refinished it can also be a good idea to include cleaning and painting the plate, refinishing the sound board and many other aspects involved in a complete piano restoration.
